To use proper formats for content in Hippo and a good rule to thumb if the file will play in windows media player or quicktime on the Hippotizer it will encode.

1. Best movie orginal is QuickTime and animation codec , million colors ( if alpha, use million + ) or Photo-JPEG Highest quality.
MPEG2 Elementary stream with .m2v extension (Transport and program will work but best avoided if poss)
Standard GOP (NOT I-Frame Only !) ,MUST be progressive, not interlaced.
Using Photo-JPG series, you will miss the audio, but it looks really good.

2. Bitrate if using precoded MPG2 or advise on settings in mediamanager:
PAL or NTSC SD : 8,000Kbps
1024 x 768 : 10,000Kbps
720P : 12,000 - 14,000 Kbps
1080P : 16,000 - 20,000 Kbps (using a lower bitrate allows more clips to be played simultaneously)

2b. MPEG2 Elementary stream
File extension .m2v
Standard GOP (15 frames)
Bitrate :

8,000 - 10,000Kbps (PAL)
10,000 - 12,000Kbps (720p)
16,000 - 22,000Kbps (1080)

Video must be Progressive not interlaced

3. Sound should be : no compression( even if it is embedded in the movie),WAV file .Must be 16 Bit
2 channels (stereo) 41Khz, 48Khz or 96Khz sample rate

4. Alpha is : Hippotizer Express and Critter: * x 288 - Hippotizer Stage: 1920 x 384 -Hippotizer HD: 1920 x 576
*Products horizontal pixel limit is 1024, anything over that will not be visible at one time but is supported up until 1920.
MPEG2 does not support transparency, so Hippo actually take the original file and create 2 files from it – one with colour data and the other with just the Alpha data, we then glue the two images on top of each other on a per-frame basis so that every frame of video is actually now twice it’s original height (colour at the bottom and alpha at the top) and because tyhe maximum sixe of an MPEG2 clip is 1920 x 1152, that means that the original file acannot be more than 576 (1152 / 2) high.

4. If using MPG2 (M2V) files, already encoded, the MPEG2 codec that Hippo use for all the media in Version 2 and Version 3 Hippotizer systems has many advantages, but it also
has a few restrictions. One of the restrictions of MPEG2 is that the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions must be a number that is divisable by 16. So if you had a movie that
was 162 x 320 pixels then it would not make a valid MPEG2 file, it would need to be either 160 x 320 or 176 x 320 pixels so that both numbers are divisable by 16.
This is not usually a problem because all standard screen resolutions are already divisable by 16 anyway, it's only a concern when you are using custom resolution LED
screens.
In HippotizerV2 you have to create legal MPEG2 files for import so there is no way around this restriction. In V3 it will accept file dimensions of any size, but the system will
automatically add a small black border around the image if necessary to make the file a legal MPEG2 files size.

The following settings are optimal for Hippotizer (although you can import
almost anything and it will transcode automatically):

MPEG2 Elementary stream with .m2v extension (Transport and program will work
but best avoided if poss)

Standard GOP (NOT I-Frame Only !)

MUST be progressive, not interlaced.

Bitrate:

PAL or NTSC : 8,000Kbps
1024 x 768 : 10,000Kbps
720P : 12,000 - 14,000 Kbps
1080P : 16,000 - 20,000 Kbps (using a lower bitrate allows more clips to be
played simultaneously)

For audio, preffered format is:

WAV file
Must be 16 Bit
2 channels (stereo)
41Khz, 48Khz or 96Khz sample rate

Please be aware most video formats can be uploaded to Hippotizer.

Hippotizer has a built in encoded that will encode the video file to MPEG2.

Please be aware if the codec of the video clip is not loaded onto the Hippotizer the file can not be encoded. In this instance the best way to find the missing codec is to load the file into GSPOT a program for analysing video codecs. This program will provide you with a name of the missing codec and also in the help tab a list of codec's and relevant websites.
