Post subject:  Microsoft ends support for Windows XP

Windows XP:

Microsoft has recently finished support for the retail versions Windows XP, and the resulting advertising campaign by Microsoft has raised concerns with Hippotizers running XP among customers and distributors. Green Hippo has long been aware that this was going to happen and we would like to explain the plans we have made around this transition.

It is important to first point out that Hippotizers are running embedded versions of Windows XP which is still supported by Microsoft, and will continue to be until 2016. Further, as an OEM provider of Windows, Green Hippo must offer customer support for our customers and not Microsoft. Therefore any change to Microsoft’s customer support arrangement will not affect Hippotizer customers and users.

More concerning perhaps for some is the cessation of security updates to Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSSE) and Internet Explorer 8. Though the security risk implied by this should not be understated, we do not encourage our users to connect to the internet with their Hippotizer for any reason other than support (TeamViewer) and software updates. This holds true for any show critical computer system, irrespective of operating system. The unique and standalone nature of media-servers means that included anti-virus software is rarely up to date (having been restored to a previous state or existing only on an isolated network). For this reason, we always advise extreme caution when connecting a Hippotizer to the internet, moving files within a network or using removable media.

That having been said, new hardware is fast moving away from Windows XP and 32bit operating systems in general. Hippotizer Chipmunk and Portamus both already operate on Windows 7 for hardware availability reasons though other aspects of this operating system make it not as well suited for the larger Hippotizer systems. With this in mind, our current development is centred on Windows 8 Embedded 64bit compatibility. This transition is on-going, and is still some months away from yielding results.

When this is finished, new and existing Windows XP Hippotizer users will be offered an upgrade path to enable them to take advantage of Windows 8 Embedded as well. The details of the policy will be published as we get closer to completing the development work. Green Hippo stands behind the Hippotizer media solution; you can be confident that systems purchased now and in the future will have a fair upgrade path to the new operating system.
