Post HowTo: Set up DMX in Hippotizer.
DMX/ArtNet
ArtNet:
Hippotizers use Artnet as their default external protocol. There are more and more devices emerging that can generate Artnet over Ethernet without the use of traditional DMX 512. If you are using this type of device you can simply connect it directly to the Ethernet port (Connector E, fig 1.2) without the need for a DMX to ARTNET converter. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for setting I.P. addresses and configuration of start addresses etc.

DMX 512:
DMX 512 has been the standard control protocol in the lighting industry for many years. Although it has its limitations we have endeavoured to make all the functions of the server controllable via an external device using this protocol. This means that where you are controlling DMX devices, you can add the Hippotizer to your setup as another ‘fixture’ and integrate it into a larger show. Furthermore, there are many lighting consoles available that have the Hippotizer ‘personality’ and with these you can sequence any series of commands easily. Please see our support website for a list of available drivers for lighting consoles.
Connecting ArtNet

To use ArtNet you need to connect the left Ethernetport of the Hippotizer to your ArtNet network (see section 2.4.5 for details). This port is preconfigured with an appropriate IP address and you can proceed directly to configuring the software.

Connecting the DMX-Tail
DMX Tail is another form of inputting DMX control for Hippotizer. This comprises of a DMX to USB convector which connects to the Hippotizer over USB.
The first time the DMX tail is plugged into each USB slot it will ask for the driver this can be found on the C:\Hippotizerv3/thirdparty/DMX-tail driver folder.
hen the windows install box appears direct it to this folder to install the drivers.

Update only/Always Update
The advantage of using ‘Update only’ is if your lighting console only outputs data when parameters are changed. The control centre will allow you to change parameters with the mouse without the desk trying to take back control.
Update only will update DMX only when the value outputted from the desk changes.
Always Update take all of the outputted data from a lighting console and will force the external device to have constant control over that parameter.

Reset Config
Resets the configuration to the default settings

DMX Configuration
By double clicking on The Art-Net Universe you can alter the settings for the Universe and Start Address
Double click on the Master/Layer fixtures to alter their parameters.

The DMX component will always default to ArtNet. To enable the DMX-Tail, double click on the ArtNet port on the left which will bring up the option to choose between Art-Net and DMX Tail.

Within this box you can also set the Start Address, Device ID, and Port.
Controlling the Timeline component via DMX

By default the DMX components maps the controls for the timeline component right after the last layer:
In this example a 4 layer machine is used and from DMX channel 246-230 one can find the timeline control. It uses 4 channels of DMX:
Timeline Select
Timeline Command select
16 bit Cue Number

Timeline Select
The timeline select channel selects which timeline is controlled. This is defined by the ID number behind the Timeline Name. These can be full numbers from 0-255. If no ID is set, then the timeline cannot be controlled via DMX.

Timeline Command Select
The following ranges trigger these commands:
0-9: Nothing
10-19: Play
20-29: Pause
30-39: Stop
40-49: GoCue and Play
50-59: Go Cue and Pause

IMPORTANT:
DMX commands are only triggered when the value actually changes. So sending a value of 45 twice will NOT result in the command being issued twice. Instead you have to program a “Nothing” Cue in between. To trigger the same command twice do this: 45, 0, 45!

16bit Cue Number
The Commands “GoCue and Play” and “GoCue and Pause” require the last 2 DMX channels to contain a 16 bit value of the Cue number. Please note that this uses 2 decimal places. So value 100 triggers cue 1, 250 triggers cue 2.5 etc. The total range of addressable cues is 0 – 655.35
